First Gambling, Now Abortion...

American Indian reservations are, in small ways, becoming little bastions of American freedom. According to the Rapid City Journal, the Oglala Sioux tribe may set up an abortion clinic on tribal land if South Dakota's draconian anti-abortion law ever goes into effect. (Via Mark Kleiman.)

One person's freedom is another person's licentiousness and/or murder. There should be "reservations" all across the land, and not just for American Indians. That's what the Framers had in mind for federalism (when the States were much less populous and economically repressive than they are today). Some "reservations" would allow abortion and gambling, among other things; others would allow some such things, but not all of them; others would be relatively restrictive (but arguably safer places to live, like small towns of old). Citizens could then "vote with their feet." The Red State-Blue State divide allows voting with one's feet to some extent, but the range of options has narrowed because most States and municipalities have beoome offshoots of the central government. Coalitions of minority interests at the State and local level are able to tyrannize the populace.
