Unintended Consequences

Read this story from India. It’s a traditional girl-meets-boy, girl-wants-to-marry-boy, girl-can’t-marry-boy-because-of-stupid-law, girl-can’t-shack-up-with-boy-because-of-another-stupid-law, girl-marries-boy’s-older-brother-to-evade-both-laws kind of story.

(Actually, it’s not clear whether shacking up is against the law, or just against her parents’ wishes. If the latter, then why should this blatant work-around make them any happier? Something doesn’t add up.)

This girl is very clever! If her parents are the strictly traditional type I guess after her elopement they'll be thanking gods just that she's married, even if "temporarily married"...

Anyway, more to the point, I like how they managed to get around the laws by means of a legal and (apparently) valid private contract...
