IF DOOR IS STUCK, PUSH DOOR OPENI had visions of straining valiantly against the elevator door to escape my imprisonment... before I realized (after leaving the elevator) that it meant the “door open” button.

All last week, the elevator in my apartment building was out of service for “necessary maintenance.” Now it’s operational again, and the primary effect of said maintenance seems to have been to slow it down. The doors, which used to pop right open, now grudgingly creak open like an achy-backed geezer getting up from a chair. A handwritten notice has now appeared on the panel inside:
